George Mathers, 1st and last Baron Mathers was born on 28 February 1886.1 He was the son of George Mathers and Annie Barclay.1 He married, firstly, Edith Mary Robinson, daughter of William Robinson, on 6 June 1916.1 He married, secondly, Jessie Newton Graham, daughter of George Graham, on 31 January 1940.1 He died on 26 September 1965 at age 79.1
He was educated at Newtown St. Boswells School, Newtown St. Boswells, Roxburghshire, ScotlandG.1 He was president of the Carlisle Trades Council and Labour Party between 1917 and 1920.1 He held the office of Member of the Carlisle City Council in 1919.1 He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1929, to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for India and the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for West Edinburgh between 1929 and 1931.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Linlithgowshire between 1935 and 1950.1 He held the office of Comptroller of H.M.
