     He was commissioned on 15 January 1924 with the rank of A/Sub-Lieutenant, in the service of the Royal Navy.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 15 December 1925.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 December 1933.¹ He gained the rank of Commander on 31 December 1938.¹ He fought in the Second World War.¹ He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1943.³ He gained the rank of Captain on 31 December 1944.¹

     Rear-Admiral James Douglas Campbell was born on 2 September 1882 at Airds Bay, Argyllshire, Scotland.¹ He was the son of Colonel Frederick Campbell and Emilie Guillaumine Maclaine.¹ He married Lilian Alice Outerbridge, daughter of Sir Joseph Outerbridge, on 11 February 1911.² He died on 23 April 1954 at age 71.¹
