John Laird was born on 24 June 1805 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of William Laird and Agnes Macgregor.1 He married Elizabeth Hurry on 29 September 1829.1 He died on 29 October 1874 at age 69.1
He was co-founder of Cammell Laird, shipbuilders.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)2

He succeeded as the 10th Baronet Young, of Dominica, West Indies [G.B., 1769] on 2 March 1944.2 He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, England.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 16th/5th Queen's Royal Lancers.1 He lived in 2003 at South End House, High Ham, Langport, Somerset, England.1
