John 'Shane Dhu' Macnachten also went by the nick-name of John 'Shane Dhu' (or in English, 'Black John.1') Circa 1580 he went to Ireland as secretary to his brother-in-law Sorley Buie Macdonnell.1

Edmund Macnaghten was born on 10 August 1679.1 He was the son of John Macnaghten and Helen Stafford.2 He married, firstly, Leonora Vesey.1 He married, secondly, Hannah Johnstone, daughter of John Johnstone, in 1761.1 He died in 1781.1
He was present as a child at Siege of Londonderry.1 He refused the chiefship of the Macnaghtans despite a clan deputation having travelled from Scotland to offer it to him following the extinction of the Scottish line.1 He lived at Beardiville, County Antrim, Ireland.1
