Colonel Hon. Herbert Alexander Lawrence was born on 8 August 1861.1 He was the son of John Laird Mair Lawrence, 1st Baron Lawrence of the Punjaub and of Grately and Harriette Katherine Hamilton.2 He married Hon. Isabel Mary Mills, daughter of Charles Henry Mills, 1st Baron Hillingdon and Lady Louisa Isabella Lascelles, on 26 April 1892.1 He died on 17 January 1943 at age 81.1
He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, and he was mentioned in despatches twice.1 He was Lieutenant-Colonel and Honorary Colonel of the King's Colonials.3 He fought in the First World War.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Manchester Regiment and 17th/21st Lancers.3 He was General and Chief of General Staff of the British Armies in France in 1918.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the 65th (Manch) AA Brigade, Royal Artillery (TA.)3
