Colonel William Carey was born on 12 May 1833 at Guernsey, Channel Islands.1 He married Julia Hewett, daughter of Lt.-Col. William Hewett and Sarah Duff, on 13 October 1864.1 He died on 19 December 1905 at age 72.1
He was commissioned in 1851 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, in the service of the Royal Artillery.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1856.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1858.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1872.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1877.1 He fought in the Afghan War between 1880 and 1881.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1881.1 He fought in the Burma War between 1885 and 1887, where he commanded the artillery.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1 He retired from the military in 1891.1
