Sir John Macartney, 1st Bt. was born on 9 March 1747.2 He was the son of William Macartney and Catherine Bankes.3 He married, firstly, Anne Scriven, daughter of Edward Scriven and Elizabeth Barclay, circa 26 February 1778.2 He married, secondly, Catherine Hussey Burgh, daughter of Rt. Hon. Walter Hussey Burgh and Anne Burgh, on 4 November 1794.1 He died on 29 May 1812 at age 65.1
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Fore [Ireland] between 1793 and 1797.2 He was appointed Knight in 1796 for promoting Irish canals.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Naas [Ireland] between 1798 and 1800.2 He was created 1st Baronet Macartney, of Lish, co. Armagh [Ireland] on 4 January 1799.2 He was Deputy Chief Remembrancer of the Court of the Exchequer.2 He had five other children.2
