James Brander Dunbar was born on 10 October 1875.1 He was the son of James Brander Dunbar-Brander and Alice Grant.2 He married Noela Whiting, daughter of Matthew Noel Whiting, on 8 February 1922.1 He died on 25 December 1969 at age 94.1
He was given the name of James Brander Dunbar-Brander at birth.1 He fought in the Boer War, where he was mentioned in despatches twice.1 He fought in the British Central East Africa Campaign in 1900.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Reserve of Officers, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.1 He fought in the Sudan Campaign between 1903 and 1904.1 He was Superior Burgh of Lossiemouth.1 He fought in the First World War, with West African Forces in Sierra Leone.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Elgin.1 His name was legally changed to James Brander Dunbar.1
