Sir Sidney Barton was born on 26 November 1876.1 He was the son of Captain James Barton and Mary Barbara Barclay.1 He married Mary Ethel Winifred MacEwen, daughter of Alexander Palmer MacEwen, on 23 July 1904.1 He died on 20 January 1946 at age 69.1
He was educated at St. Paul's School, London, EnglandG.1 He entered HM Consular Service in 1895 at ChinaG.1 He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1910 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-law.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1913.1 He was the Consul-General between 1922 and 1929 at Shanghai, ChinaG.1 He was the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary between 1929 and 1937 to EthiopiaG, (Ethiopia).1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1930.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1936.1

Mary Ethel Winifred MacEwen was the daughter of Alexander Palmer MacEwen.1 She married Sir Sidney Barton, son of Captain James Barton and Mary Barbara Barclay, on 23 July 1904.1 She died in April 1945.1
