     Samuel Ernest Palmer, 1st Baron Palmer was born on 28 March 1858.1 He was the son of Samuel Palmer and Mary Jane Marsh.2 He married Amy Christiana Nottage, daughter of George Swan Nottage, on 10 February 1881.1 He died on 8 December 1948 at age 90.1
     Samuel Ernest Palmer, 1st Baron Palmer usually went by his middle name of Ernest.1 He was educated at Malvern College, Malvern, Worcestershire, EnglandG.1 He was director of Huntley & Palmers.1 In 1902 he founded the Royal College of Music Berkshire Scholarship.1 In 1903 he founded the Royal College of Music Patrons' Fund.1 He was deputy chairman of the Great Western Railway (G.W.R.) between 1906 and 1943.1 He was created 1st Baronet Palmer, of Reading, co. Berkshire [U.K.] on 26 January 1916.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County London.1 He was appointed First Fellow, Royal College of Music (R.C.M.) in 1921.1 He held the office of Lieutenant of City London.1 In 1924 he founded the Ernest Palmer Fund for Opera Study at the Royal College of Music (R.C.M.)1 He held the office of High Sheriff in 1924.1 He founded the Guildhall School of Music scholarship.1 He founded the Honorary Freeman Musicians' Company scholarship.1 He was vice-president of the Royal College of Music (R.C.M.) in 1929.1 He was created 1st Baron Palmer, of Reading, co. Berkshire [U.K.] on 24 June 1933.1

     Margaret Smith was born on 13 March 1803.1 She was the daughter of William Smith.1 She married Philip Grierson, son of James Grierson and Helen Morrison, on 16 December 1822 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandG.1 She died on 8 December 1881 at age 78 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 She was also reported to have died on 15 December 1881.1 She was buried on 19 December 1881 at Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1
     From 16 December 1822, her married name became Grierson.1
