John Kennedy, 5th Earl of Cassillis was born in 1575.1 He was the son of Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassillis and Margaret Lyon.1 A contract for the marriage of John Kennedy, 5th Earl of Cassillis and Jean Fleming was signed on 4 November 1597.2 He died in October 1615, without issue.2

Katherine Macdowall was the daughter of Uchtred Macdowall, 11th of Garthland and Eupham Dunbar.2,3 She married by contract, firstly, Hew Kennedy, Master of Cassillis, son of Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassillis and Margaret Lyon, on 2 September 1600.4 She married, secondly, Sir James Stewart, 1st Lord Ochiltree, son of James Stewart, 1st and last Earl of Arran and Lady Elizabeth Stewart, before 16 May 1622.4

Sir James Stewart, 1st Lord Ochiltree was the son of James Stewart, 1st and last Earl of Arran and Lady Elizabeth Stewart.1 He married, firstly, Katherine Macdowall, daughter of Uchtred Macdowall, 11th of Garthland and Eupham Dunbar, before 16 May 1622.2 He married, secondly, Mary Livingston, daughter of unknown Livingston, before 1653.3 He died after 1658.
In 1615 he bought the Ochiltree lands and acquired the Ochiltree (territorial) Barony by his cousin's resignation of it in his favour.3 He was created 1st Lord Ochiltree [Scotland] on 9 June 1615.3

John Kennedy, 6th Earl of Cassillis was born before 1605. He was the son of Hew Kennedy, Master of Cassillis and Katherine Macdowall.1 He married by contract, firstly, Lady Jean Hamilton, daughter of Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington and Margaret Foulis, on 7 January 1621/22 at Whitehall, London, EnglandG.1 He married, secondly, Lady Margaret Hay, daughter of William Hay, 10th Earl of Erroll and Lady Anne Lyon, on 15 March 1643/44.1 A contract for the marriage of John Kennedy, 6th Earl of Cassillis and Lady Margaret Hay was signed on 20 February 1643/44.1 He died in April 1668.
