     Lyon Playfair, 1st Baron Playfair was born on 21 May 1818 at Chunar, IndiaG.1 He was the son of George Playfair and Janet Ross.1 He married, firstly, Margaret Eliza Oakes, daughter of James Oakes, on 28 July 1846.1 He married, secondly, Jean Ann Millington, daughter of Crawley Millington, on 17 December 1857.1 He married, thirdly, Edith Russell, daughter of Samuel Hammond Russell, on 3 October 1878.1 He died on 29 May 1898 at age 80.1
     He was educated at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, ScotlandG.1 He was Professor in 1845 at New School of Mines, Jermyn Street, London, EnglandG.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1848.1 He graduated from Giessen University, Giessen, Hessen, GermanyG, with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)1 In 1851 he helped to organise the Great Exhibition.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1851.1 He was Presidet of the Chemical Society between 1857 and 1859.1 He was Professor of Chemistry between 1858 and 1869 at University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)      Lt.-Col. Sir Robert Lambert Playfair was born in 1828.1 He was the son of George Playfair and Janet Ross.1 He married Agnes Ranken Webster, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Thomas Webster and Agnes Ross, on 24 December 1851 at Bombay, India.1 He died in February 1899.1
     He was commissioned in 1846, in the service of the Madras Artillery.1 He was Assistant Political Resident at Aden between 1854 and 1862.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1858.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.) in 1860.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1861 in the Madras Staff Corps.1 He was political agent at Zanzibar in 1862.1 He was consul for Zanzibar in 1863.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1866.1 He was consul-general for Algeria in 1867.1 He retired from the military in 1867, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.1 He was consul-general for Algeria and Tunis in 1885.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1886.1 He was consul-general for Algeria and the Northern coast of Africa between 1889 and 1896.1

     Agnes Ranken Webster was born on 8 April 1832.2 She was the daughter of Maj.-Gen. Thomas Webster and Agnes Ross.1,2 She married Lt.-Col. Sir Robert Lambert Playfair, son of George Playfair and Janet Ross, on 24 December 1851 at Bombay, India.1
     From 24 December 1851, her married name became Playfair.1
