     Lt.-Col. Sir Robert Lambert Playfair was born in 1828.¹ He was the son of George Playfair and Janet Ross.¹ He married Agnes Ranken Webster, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Thomas Webster and Agnes Ross, on 24 December 1851 at Bombay, India.¹ He died in February 1899.¹
     He was commissioned in 1846, in the service of the Madras Artillery.¹ He was Assistant Political Resident at Aden between 1854 and 1862.¹ He gained the rank of Captain in 1858.¹ He was appointed Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.) in 1860.¹ He gained the rank of Captain in 1861 in the Madras Staff Corps.¹ He was political agent at Zanzibar in 1862.¹ He was consul for Zanzibar in 1863.¹ He gained the rank of Major in 1866.¹ He was consul-general for Algeria in 1867.¹ He retired from the military in 1867, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.¹ He was consul-general for Algeria and Tunis in 1885.¹ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1886.¹ He was consul-general for Algeria and the Northern coast of Africa between 1889 and 1896.¹

     Agnes Ranken Webster was born on 8 April 1832.² She was the daughter of Maj.-Gen. Thomas Webster and Agnes Ross.^1,2 She married Lt.-Col. Sir Robert Lambert Playfair, son of George Playfair and Janet Ross, on 24 December 1851 at Bombay, India.¹
     From 24 December 1851, her married name became Playfair.¹

     Maj.-Gen. Thomas Webster was born in 1781.² He was the son of Robert Webster and Margaret Hunter.² He was baptised on 18 January 1781 at Fowlis Easter, Perthshire, Scotland.³ He married Agnes Ross, daughter of John Ross and Janet Ranken, circa 1825.³ He died on 10 November 1843 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.³
     He lived at Balgarvie, Fife, Scotland^G.¹
