     Lt.-Col. Sir Charles William Miles, 5th Bt. was born on 7 July 1883.¹ He was the son of Sir Henry Robert William Miles, 4th Bt. and Mary Neame.¹ He married Favell Mary Hill, daughter of Charles Gathorne Hill, on 1 October 1912.¹ He died on 28 December 1966 at age 83.¹
     He was educated at Uppingham School, Uppingham, Rutland, England^G.¹ He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Somerset Light Infantry.¹ He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Miles, of Leigh Court, co. Somerset [U.K., 1859] on 7 February 1915.¹ He was Assistant Military Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief of India between 1916 and 1919.¹ He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1919.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Somerset in 1932.¹
